General Description of the Technology

With the modernization project, new equipment was added, allowing for automatic sorting. The main sorting machine is optical separators that recognize the quality of materials.
The recovery rates have increased, as has the facility’s capacity.
Furthermore, the most important feature is that the facility now achieves sorting of both mixed and source-separated waste using the same technology.
The recyclable materials recovered by the new equipment include paper, PE film, HDPE, PP, and PET.

Technology used:

  • Bag splitters for opening small bags to recover the materials they contain.
  • Optical separators for sorting various materials. These recognize the quality of the material of each item. With advanced software, they are programmed to sort the desired materials.
  • Ballistic separators for sorting materials based on their shape.
  • Compaction baler for baling the recovered materials.
  • Conveyor belts for material transport.
  • Compressed air production unit required for the operation of optical separators.
  • Dust extraction unit for removing and collecting dust created by the process.
  • Electrical installation for power and automation of the facility’s operations.

Investment Cost
The upgrade cost was approximately €6.70 million.

Capacity

  • The facility handles both mixed waste and source-separated waste from the Chania Prefecture.
  • The facility’s capacity is 90,000 t/year for mixed waste and 15,000 t/year for source-separated waste.

Products

The new equipment of the facility is responsible for recovering:

  • Paper 6.2 t/h
  • Film 1.19 t/h
  • HDPE 1.06 t/h
  • PP 0.69 t/h
  • PET 0.91 t/h

Operation Schedule, Maintenance, and Functionality

The facility operates 6 days a week, with 2 shifts per day.

The project includes scheduled cleaning and maintenance times. Common tasks will be handled by the existing workforce, while larger-scale maintenance work for bigger machines will be carried out by the corresponding supplier.
