Mechanical Recycling Plant (MRP) of Ano Liosia

The “Green Factory” (EMA) at the Waste Management Facility (OEDA) of Filis includes a Mechanical Recycling and Composting Plant (EMA) located in Ano Liosia, which is an essential part of the regional waste management plan. The facility, which has a processing capacity of 300,000 tons per year, focuses on recycling, secondary fuel production, and composting high-quality compost from pre-separated organic waste.

Key facts about the EMA:

Location: OEDA, Western Attica
Capacity: 1,200 tons/day
Annual processing: 300,000 tons of municipal waste

  • Mixed municipal waste: 200,000 tons/year
  • Pre-separated organic waste (kBA): 60,000 tons/year
  • Green waste (pruned materials): 40,000 tons/year

Products:

  • Compost: 100-150 tons of compost per day
  • SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel): More than 150 tons/day
  • Recyclable materials: Around 50 tons of recyclables (aluminum, iron, plastic, paper, cardboard) per day
  • Non-recyclable waste: 450-500 tons/day

The facility started its construction in 1997 with EU funding and employs about 200 workers. It is one of the largest waste treatment plants in Europe, and in 2021, it began an upgrade to a “Green Factory” focusing on sustainability and the reduction of environmental impact.

The current expansion includes improving the treatment of pre-separated organic waste and green waste to create high-quality compost, as well as increasing efficiency and capacity. The plant features modern systems for monitoring waste processing, including real-time electronic monitoring of all machines and processing phases.
