LTPU (Leachate Treatment Processing Unit) WMC Western Attica

Since June 2023, HELECTOR, through the JV HELECTOR-WATT LTPU WMC Western Attica, has undertaken the execution of the four-year contract for the “Provision of Operation, Maintenance, and Capacity Enhancement Services for the Leachate Treatment Units of the WMC Western Attica.” The contract’s objective is the proper and uninterrupted operation and maintenance of all leachate collection and treatment units of the landfill sites within the WMC of Western Attica. The capacity of the existing units amounts to 700 cubic meters of leachate per day.

The main treatment units consist of:

• Collection of leachate and its transportation through Pumping Stations
• Equalization and storage tanks for incoming leachate
• Biological Treatment Units with an activated sludge system and ultrafiltration membranes
• Reverse Osmosis Units
• High-Pressure Reverse Osmosis Units
• Thermal Evaporation Units utilizing thermal energy from the cooling circuit of the adjacent biogas engines

These treatment stages ensure the complete processing of incoming leachate, achieving a water recovery rate suitable for irrigation of over 80% while significantly reducing both volume and pollutant load.

As part of the contract, the treatment capacity will be increased to 1,300 cubic meters of leachate per day through the construction and procurement of additional treatment units. This expansion will cover the total volume of generated leachate while achieving a water recovery rate of over 90%.
